The Heart Institute A comprehensive cardiac care program The WVU Heart Institute’s cardiac team uses the most current diagnostic procedures to detect and evaluate mild to life-threatening heart problems in our new, state-of-the-art facility. What is a heart attack? What is sudden cardiac death? Board-certified cardiac experts Our board-certified cardiac experts include: medical and interventional cardiologists surgeons cardiac electrophysiologists and others who treat people with all types of heart problems—from congenital heart issues to heart attacks. WVU’s doctors have been performing open-heart surgery for more than 30 years. We offer both traditional and the latest, minimally invasive interventions, followed by cardiac rehabilitation and heart disease management programs. After surgery or other procedures, we work with your primary care doctor to get you back on your feet as soon as possible. Door to balloon time at or exceeding the national benchmark “Door to balloon time” is a measure of the time it takes for a heart attack patient who arrives at the hospital to get to surgery. The standard is set at 90 minutes from arrival in the emergency department to the cardiac catheterization lab. At WVU’s Ruby Memorial Hospital, we consistently meet or beat the 90-minute door to balloon time standard.
